There are two ways to approach picking a garbage disposal.

2. Use a garbage disposal product selector tool. This will take into account your personal life-style for those who are not sure how much horsepower they actually need.

1. Turn on sink cold water. Cold water holds fats and oils together allowing them to be washed through the drain pipe.
2. Turn on disposer. (wall switch or button switch).
3. Gradually feed food scraps into drain opening. Mix up scraps if possible.
4. Run until grinding stops; turn off disposer.
5. Keep water running for a few seconds to rinse the disposer.

A continuous feed garbage disposal is most common and is powered by a switch (wall or air). The disposal is run continually until all food is fed through. Alternatively, a batch feed garbage disposal is one that the switch is in the disposal cover, so the disposal runs only when the cover is on.
